Database and Mapping Software for Documentation of Historical Properties and Their Inhabitants

The Biographical Sub-Module records a complete life history of individuals. Each person is identified by a unique Person Code, which is referenced throughout the Cultural Resources database.
Included are General Data, Life History, Marriage/ Children, Occupation/Employment, Residence/Wealth, Service, Education and Literacy, and Census Data.

The Documents Sub-Module records Conveyance Documents -Deeds, Patents, Court Cases, Orphans Court and Probate Documents - Wills, Inventories, Accounts, Sales, and Letters of Administration

The Properties Sub-Module records data on property types: Land, House/Structure,Ship, Mineral/Water Rights, Right of Way, or "Other". Each property can be mapped via the AutoCAD Interface. Through linkage to the Documents Sub-Module, it is easy find the chain of title or successors to any property.

Each Resource is identified by a code that includes its Class, Type, Item, and individual number - for example Class- "Buildings" | Type - "Residences" | Item - "Main House" | Number - 2.

The Artifacts Sub-Module records and automatically dates artifacts, based on such factors as Form, Maker, Maker's Marks, Color, Pattern, Technique, and Style.

One of the most useful features of the system is an easy to use tool for querying the database. Search results can be outputted as printed reports, spreadsheets, web pages, or maps. An EndNote® - compatible bibliography generator automatically creates a formatted list of all sources that were used to create a report.

Properties, Resources, Sites, and Units are linked to an AutoCAD Map. It is possible to instantly zoom to any mapped object, click an object on the map and open its database record and to print maps showing one or more selected objects, or the results of a query.

The database uses as its platform OpenInsight, a powerful relational database product developed by Revelation Software. It features multi-valued and variable-length data fields. This means that each field can hold more than one piece of data and there is no practical limit to the amount of data that can be entered in any field.

The design follows the Relational Database Model, in which multiple data tables are inter-related. At present, the database encompasses more than 60 different data tables.
